Remember the old grey tech of the eighties? I do.
I’m The Old Grey Techie, a seasoned tech enthusiast with a memory that stretches all the way back to the days of Lotus 1-2-3, WordStar, and WordPerfect... welcome to my little corner of the web!
If these names of retro software ring a bell with you, you’re probably reminiscing about the good old days of floppy disks and dial-up internet too... and if they don’t, don’t worry, I’m here to translate ancient tech speak into modern lingo.
I’ve been around the block a few times, okay, more than a few, but that doesn’t mean I’m stuck in the past. In fact, I’ve been riding the waves of technology since the first mobile phones were the size of bricks, and I’ve kept up with every smartphone upgrade since.
I was there when MySpace was the coolest place to hang out online, and yes, I wasted more hours playing the very original Tetris than I’d care to admit.
Now, let me take you back to where it all started, my first computer: the legendary rubber keys Sinclair Spectrum.
With a whopping 1KB of RAM (yes, you read that right), I dove headfirst into the world of machine coding, learning to coax that little black box into doing my bidding.
It wasn’t exactly plug-and-play, but those hours spent typing in code line by line laid the foundation for a lifelong passion for technology.
I contributed to magazines such as Micro Mart and Your Spectrum.
Sure, I might remember the days when a mouse was a novelty and touchscreens were something out of a sci-fi movie, but don’t let my age fool you... I’m just as excited about the latest gadget or software update as anyone younger than me.
Whether it’s building or upgrading a new PC, exploring the latest apps, or writing about the Dangerous Connection between TikTok and Temu, I’m all in.
So Why This Blog?
That's easy... There is an old adage that says, "The best way to learn something is to teach it." For me It's more than just a catchy phrase - it holds deep wisdom that applies to many aspects of my life.
During my career, I've been fortunate enough to have been a teacher / trainer in IT. I've taught people in a wide variety of settings; corporate, public and private sectors, including hospitals and day care centres and I've been very privileged to have taught people from all areas of life, including people with learning and physical difficulties as well as people with mental health issues.
The one main thing I've found through all this, is that by teaching, I myself have learned a great deal... and not just about tech.
As I'm keen on tech, and as I'm a keen advocate for life-long learning, I find that this blog not only keeps my brain keen, but also hopefully goes some way to bring tech to you in a easy, laid back way.
So, if you’re looking for tech tips with a side of nostalgia, or just want to know what all this new-fangled stuff is from someone who’s seen it all, you’re in the right place.
After all, just because I’ve been around a while doesn’t mean I’m not up to speed.
So stick around and let’s dive into some tech stuff... whether it's old or new... together!
